This session will be held on Friday, March 21st, from 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm. The National Health Service Corps (NHSC) is a loan and scholarship program that helps clinicians and students pay off their student loan debt in exchange for service to underserved communities.  NHSC has helped communities recruit and retain quality primary care clinicians committed to providing care where they’re needed most.

Kathy Welborn, MPA, is a Public Health Analyst for the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) Bureau of Health Workforce Division of Regional Operations in the Region 4, Atlanta office.

In this role, Kathy is the State Lead working with physicians and providers in Alabama and Mississippi to become National Health Service Corps (NHSC) approved sites. Kathy provides technical assistance, conducts site visits, and analyzes applications to evaluate site compliance with NHSC program requirements. She collaborates with the Alabama and Mississippi Primary Care Officers to amplify the reach and impact of the NHSC program across the state. Kathy maintains communication and supports NHSC and Nurse Corps scholars and awardees as they search for employment to complete their service requirement in a community of need.

Before joining HRSA, Kathy was the Children 1st Program Manager at the Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH). Children 1st links eligible children to early intervention services, as well as other public health programs and community-based resources. While at DPH, Kathy served on the Georgia Infant & Early Childhood Mental Health Task Force working to build and sustain a comprehensive and collaborative Early Childhood System of Care in Georgia that promotes early relational health.

Before moving to Atlanta, Kathy was the Director of Programs and Client Engagement for Escambia County Healthy Start Coalition in Pensacola, Florida. In this capacity, she planned community outreach and health education events for families, managed the intake and referral services program for pregnant women and infants, and worked to cultivate relationships with stakeholders in the medical community, business leaders, and government officials to improve birth outcomes for families in Florida. Additionally, Kathy has more than 10 years of experience in student recruitment, program management, assessment, evaluation, and compliance monitoring within higher education having worked in Admissions and Financial Aid in her home state of South Carolina. Kathy holds a Master of Public Administration degree from the College of Charleston and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration & Psychology from Converse College.

The Alabama AHEC Network is dedicated to recruiting, training, and retaining the Alabama healthcare workforce while broadening the distribution of the health workforce, enhancing the quality of care, and improving health care delivery to rural an underserved populations in Alabama.
